Moving in Utrecht: plan the van’s route and unloading point

Give your mover the postcode, house number and any apartment suffix. A Dutch address form may call that suffix a “huisnummertoevoeging”. Check which entrance leads to your apartment rather than assuming the main door shown on a map is the useful one.

Take a street-level photo with the entrance visible. Describe the path from there to your rooms, including a gate, courtyard or shared hallway. If you have not yet collected the keys, ask the landlord or agent for the missing details and mark anything still unconfirmed.

Utrecht publishes a dedicated page for moving vehicles. It covers loading and unloading, vehicle restrictions and zero-emission-zone access. Use it as the starting point for a discussion about the vehicle the mover plans to send.

A route generated for a passenger car does not answer those questions for a removal truck. Ask who checks the proposed route and vehicle. If the company later changes the vehicle, raise the access question again rather than assuming the earlier plan still fits.

The municipality publishes goods-vehicle routes for areas including Wijk C, Mariaplaats and the Museumkwartier. Its route page also links to an accessibility map and current roadworks. Share the information for the area around your address with the mover, alongside the entrance photo.

On Dutch municipal pages, “laden en lossen” means loading and unloading; “ontheffing” means an exemption. If the guidance leaves the position at your address unclear, ask the municipality about that specific address, date and vehicle. A loading location on a map does not itself reserve it for your move.

Ask the landlord, managing agent or owners’ association about moving arrangements. The owners’ association is often called the “VvE”. Confirm which doors someone must open and whether the internal lift can be used for the proposed move. Share any building instructions with the mover.

Have the mover assess the available lift and carrying route against the furniture. Describe floors clearly: “begane grond” is ground floor in Dutch. Keep keys and the contact number of whoever opens the building with you, rather than packing them.

• Who confirms the proposed unloading location?
• Who can answer the phone if access is different on arrival?

Changes to key collection, nearby works or the assigned vehicle should go back to the person planning the move. Ask what needs adjusting before the driver leaves. Separate a preferred arrival time from one that has actually been agreed.
